(December 19, 2021) It seems every manufacturer has created a special trim level with a robust off-road look for their SUV lineup. Some of the special editions are for show only with exterior bits and pieces such as larger tires and body side moldings giving the vehicle additional driveway panache. There's nothing underneath the skin to back up the trail-rated looks. But other manufacturers are giving their vehicles not only a hardcore persona, but are backing it up with off-road equipment for "overlanding" duties that can take the occupants beyond the rutted fishing-hole road.

The compact Subaru Crosstrek CUV has been popular with shoppers since its inception in 2012. We've like it too, during test drives in 2013 and 2018. Very few complaints other than its performance — it didn't have quite enough urgency to suit our tastes. The big news for 2021 is that Subaru has alleviated that concern with a new 2.5-liter flat 4-cylinder engine making 182 horsepower. It's the same engine used in he mid-sized Legacy sedan and the Outback crossover.

(May 3, 2020) Subaru has a very loyal following that has kept the company moving forward in sales virtually every month for the last several years. For instance, sales in February — the last month before the current COVID-19 crisis — jumped 5.3 percent over February 2019 and nearly hit 100,000 for the first two months of the year. There's little doubt that 2020 would have been another record year. We point this out because in addition to the company's loyal buyers, Subaru has kept its vehicles fresh and desirable.

And loyalty to the iconic Outback — the vehicle that arguably lifted the Japanese brand into the mainstream nearly three decades ago — enjoys a good portion of this loyalty. Today the all-new 2020 Outback will not disappoint. It represents an impressive leap forward in virtually all categories including styling, performance, ride and handling, and technology and safety.

We've liked the small Subaru Forester crossover SUV since its inception in 1998 — although two decades ago it was more a high-riding station wagon with all-wheel drive than a SUV — and nothing about the vehicle up to the current all-new fifth-generation model has altered our opinion.

Virtually every mainstream automaker has at least one large crossover SUV in its lineup. So it is only fitting that Subaru, a pioneer in the crossover segment with its long-running Outback, has joined the fray with the three-row 2019 Ascent.
