Kia recalls 427,000 Tellurides over roll away risk

(March 29, 2024) WASHINGTON — Kia America is recalling about 427,000 Telluride vehicles in the U.S. over a potential defect that could cause those vehicles to roll away while in park. The recall covers 2020-24 Telluride large crossovers. The intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft on those vehicles might not be fully engaged because of "suspected improper assembly by the supplier," according to a recall report submitted Tuesday to NHTSA.

"Over time, partial engagement can cause damage to the intermediate shaft splines," the report states. "Damaged shaft splines may result in unintended vehicle movement while in 'park' if the parking brake is not engaged." To prevent vehicle rollaway, Kia is advising owners to move the gear shifter to the "park" position and manually engage the electronic parking brake before exiting their vehicles.

To fix the issue, dealers will install updated electronic parking brake software. If damage to the intermediate shaft is found after the update, dealers will replace the part. Dealers will be notified starting May 13. Owners will be notified starting May 15.
